Today's Daily Office

I get a daily devotional reading based on the Daily Office readings in my e-mail inbox each day.

I was really struck by the end of today's Old Testament reading:

"If you do not stand firm in faith, you shall not stand at all."

I'm also in a recently started Bible Study group that is studying the Gospel of Matthew and we were talking this past Tuesday night about what people have done/will do when left to their own devices. For some reason this second half of Isaiah 7:9 in the RSV trigged a connection between these two thoughts in my mind.

The Anglican Prayer Blog - Lent & Beyond has a great prayer based on Isaiah 7:9b.

And speaking of standing firm in faith - yesterday was Santa Lucia Day.

JibJab's 2006 Year in Review Video

Tip of the Blogger Hat to the Ranter for passing the link to this first webvideo on via e-mail.

Two of my favorite classic JibJab videos are This Land and Big Box Mart, neither of which have the embed code posted on JibJab, so you'll have to go there to watch them, which I highly recommend you do.

And here, since it is December, is our dear leader singing Deck the Halls:

Holiday MeMe - 2006 Edition

Welcome to the 2006 Holiday Edition of Getting to Know Your Friends! You know the drill. And if you've posted this meme on your blog - leave a comment and I'll link to your post if you link to mine.

Here's my version:

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?? Mint hot chocolate.

  2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Wrapped.

  3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? I would have both, but I'll be out of town.

  4. Do you hang mistletoe on house? No.

  5. When do you put your decorations up? I would put them up on Christmas Eve, after Midnight Mass (though lights would be up for Advent along with greens and Advent Wreath) if I wasn't going to be out of town.

  6. What is your favorite holiday meal (excluding dessert)? French Toast with Peanut Butter along with Scrambled Eggs with lots of Cheese added to them for Breakfast on Christmas Morning.

  7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child: Using my Christmas $ from Great Aunt E. when I was 14 to buy a huge Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve day to ensure that there was a tree that Christmas.

  8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Sometime or other I came across a book about the real Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Symrna.

  9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? That depends on which relative(s) I'm spending Christmas with.

  10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Tastefully - and no FAKE trees for me!

  11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Love it!!! Especially when I can stay inside and be nice and toasty while it falls from the sky.

  12. Can you ice skate? No. I tried once and landed on my bum. Burr. That was the end of that. I can snowshoe though.

  13. Do you remember your favorite gift? The big box when a bunch of small wrapped gifts that I got one year from my mum.

  14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Advent Lessons and Carols are only topped by Midnight Mass (there is usually no celebration of the Eucharist at Advent L&C).

  15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Candied Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows (using anything else in the Candied Yams is just wrong).

  16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Going to Midnight Mass.

  17. What tops your tree? I used to have a big handmade-by-someone-else angel but she got lost in moving around I think. I'll have to make a new one if I ever host Christmas at my own place.

  18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? Both - which I realize is a very "Anglican" answer ;-)

  19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? I can't really pick just one. I guess Silent Night as in kneeling in a candle-lit Cathedral singing Silent Night sans music while trying not to drip wax on myself or catch anything/anyone on fire.

  20. Candy Canes! Yuck or yummy? Take candy cane and stick it in hot cocoa as a stir stick. Yummers!

  21. Favorite Christmas Movie? Three-way tie 1942's Holiday Inn / 1954's White Christmas / 1945's Christmas in Connecticut, but then I haven't seen 2006's The Nativity Story yet. (I wonder if the movie will be as good as the book.)

  22. What would you most like to find under your tree this year? See http://tinyurl.com/ygs5x6

  23. Favorite Holiday memory as an adult? Midnight Mass at Trinity Cathedral, Portland - a memory I'll be reliving this year. Thanks be to God!
